Thomas Lai-Fook: “My history in the Aquarium Hobby – The Shoreline Aquatics Story”
SPU, Otto Miller Hall Room 109
Thomas Lai-Fook joined GSAS last year, but has been in the hobby since the age of six, spending his youth in water, ponds and creeks. For several years he has been specializing in Altum angelfish (Pterophyllum altum). Between their decreasing habitat, import mortality, and the problems of keeping wild-caught Altums, Thomas is now making a push to produce Altum angelfishes spawned from wild stock, a very difficult feat. His goal is to preserve these fishes in our hobby as they would appear in the wild, including preserving the variations found in different collection points.
Thomas formed Shoreline Aquatics in 2017; it is a family business that strives to produce high quality fish in small quantities. In addition to the aforementioned Altums, he also breeds short-fin snow white Ancistrus plecos, Ivanacara bimaculata, and various Apistogramma. He is now trying his hand at some black catfishes, and cherry shrimp he uses as feed.
